With No Medicaid Expansion, We’ll Need Many Spoonfuls of Sugar

The decision not to expand Medicaid, made by our Governor and General Assembly, has an everyday impact on Hoosier families. Healthy workers are good for business continuity and productivity, and more importantly, are better able to provide for their families. Healthy children are in class, helping to improve the education process. Insured individuals are able to more cheaply treat small problems instead of relying on the emergency room and late treatment for more threatening ailments.

We’ve known for some time that, by refusing to expand Medicaid, our Governor and Republican supermajorities have chosen to have our tax money go to benefit citizens of other States. Now, we have a better idea of the economic impact to Indiana.

According to a recently-published report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Indiana saves $1.1 billion over the next ten years by not expanding Medicaid. This decision, however, means that we lose out on $17.3 billion, for a net loss of over $16 billion (yes, with a “b”) over ten years. If we want to break the numbers down further, that’s an average of $1.6 billion per year, or 80% of our prized $2 billion surplus. At the expense of Hoosier families, the Republican supermajorities and our Governor have really made quite a statement to the President.

Indiana doesn’t have an impeachment or recall process. Instead, the remedy is to make our voices heard in the voting booth this November. House District 93 is a great place to start.
